Sliptong
De tong komt aan zijn naam door zijn langgerekte ovale vorm en ronde kop. De bovenkant van de tong is donkerbruin met kleine stipjes en de onderkant is licht van kleur. Tongen kunnen een maximale lengte van 75 cm behalen met een gewicht van 3 kg, echter is dit wel uitzonderlijk. De sorteringen in de handel lopen van sliptong, de kleinste maat verkrijgbaar, tot en met laptong van 600+ gram, de grootste maat in de markt.
De meeste tongen worden gevangen in de Noordzee, maar ze komen voor van het noordelijkste puntje van de Noordzee tot en met de Middellandse Zee. De tongen zijn het hele jaar door verkrijgbaar maar zijn het beste van kwaliteit in de maanden juli tot februari. Het visvlees van de tong is stevig, sappig en licht van kleur. Het is een erg populaire vis in de gastronomie.
