Gamba’s
Gamba’s zijn grote garnalen welke in zout water leven. De meeste soorten worden op grote schaal gekweekt in Azië en diepgevroren geïmporteerd. De grootte van de gamba’s en scampi’s wordt met getallen uitgedrukt. Voorbeelden zijn: 6-8 of 13-15 of 16-20. Deze cijfers geven het gemiddelde aantal gamba’s per kilogram met kop. Bij vishandel Schot worden garnalen met kop aangeduid als gamba en garnalen zonder kop, easy peel en gepeld als scampi.
Vangstgebied
Gamba’s worden overal ter wereld in zoet en zout water gevangen, maar meestal worden gamba’s gekweekt in speciale kweekvijvers.

Smaak
Gamba’s hebben een zoete smaak en zijn uitermate geschikt om te koken, grillen, bakken, roerbakken of te voor op de barbecue. De garnalen moeten snel worden verwarmd om te voorkomen dat ze droog worden. Daarnaast kunnen de gamba’s ook koud worden geserveerd. Gamba’s hebben een stevige structuur.
Wist je dat..?
Het grootste deel van de garnalen word geboren als mannetje. Als ze met een vrouwtje kleine garnaaltjes hebben gemaakt, worden ze zelf ook een vrouwtje.
