Grijze garnaal / Hollandse garnaal
De grijze of Hollandse garnaal is een echt smaakmaker die rechtstreeks afkomstig is uit de Noordzee en Waddenzee. De grijze garnaal staat vooral bekend om haar lichtzoete en zilte smaak en heeft een malse, stevige structuur. Er wordt het hele jaar op de garnaal gevist, maar van september tot november zijn de garnalen op hun dikst en worden er het meest gevangen.

Wist je dat..?
Garnalen worden altijd met de hand gepeld. Doordat de Hollandse garnalen zo klein zijn, kun dit proces niet met machines worden uitgevoerd. De garnalen gaan daarom na het vissen en koken op transport naar bijvoorbeeld Marokko of Polen waar de garnalen gepeld worden door goedkope arbeidskrachten. Vroeger gebeurde dat uiteraard wel in Nederland.
